CHAPTER EIGHT
Jenny, not quite sure whether or not sheâd been officially dismissed, and therefore now free to return to the inn, glanced around uncertainly.
During her long interview with the inspector, more police reinforcements had arrived, and she noticed that all the remaining spectators were busily giving their details to the uniformed officers, along with, she supposed, a brief description of what theyâd all seen and heard. She noticed that many of them were also transferring photographs and videos that theyâd made of the event from their mobile phones, onto the police officersâ own devices. And she could only hope that they revealed something vital, because at that moment she hadnât got anything even remotely approaching a clue as to what could have happened that had resulted in Rachel Norman being killed.
A blue-and-white police tape cordon was in the process of being set up to keep people from trespassing around the circumference of the pond, and several other police officers were on their hands and knees doing a minute and painstaking search of the grass and bank surrounding it.
But most distressing of all, Rachel Normanâs body was just being slipped discreetly and chillingly into a black body bag, in readiness to be taken away to the waiting coronerâs mortuary van that had now taken the place of the unnecessary ambulance.
Hastily averting her gaze from this macabre scene, Jenny became distracted by a movement off to her left. And, turning her head, she saw a woman on the far side of the pond, near to the path that led to the little jetty that went out to the middle of the water. She seemed to be staring across at the scene, as if looking for something. Or, perhaps, someone.
But making their way steadily towards her were the police officers with the blue-and-white police tape and little metal poles, who were intent on securing the area. As Jenny watched, one officer would competently hammer a little metal pole into the grass, whilst the other one wound the tape around and through it, before looping it along to the next pole.
The woman suddenly seemed to notice their approach and quickly set off. But not towards Jenny and the others, where a path leading back to the village could be found, but instead setting off across the rough field beyond. Clearly, she didnât want to have to talk to the police, or be seen by any of the other spectators who were still hanging around.
Which instantly made Jenny sit up and take extra notice. So intent was she on watching this distinctly suspicious behaviour that it took a while for the cook to realise that sheâd actually seen the woman somewhere before.
Jenny didnât know why, but sheâd have been willing to bet money (well, a modest amount!) that the stranger wasnât just another random villager. Not someone whoâd merely been lured out to see what was going on and, whilst curious to see what was happening, was at the same time anxious not to get actively involved.
